Funeral Social Media Marketing

Does social media marketing intimidate or confuse you? Do you wonder if social media is even important for the funeral profession?

If you find yourself thinking that way, you’ve come to the right place.

Many funeral professionals still aren’t sure how to interact with their virtual communities on Facebook. Or, they still haven’t taken the leap to Facebook at all!

We’ve got the perfect cure for that.

Below you’ll find all kinds of inspiration from funeral professionals just like you who are using the new Facebook Timeline to connect with their audiences in ways you couldn’t imagine…

… and doing it the right way!

1. ASD – Answering Service for Directors

ASD does a great job showcasing their most valuable Facebook content by pinning it to the top of their page. They’ve learned that pinning an important call-to-action is a great way to generate ROI from social media. Whether it’s asking followers to download a white paper, check out a blog, or learn more about a product – pinning a call-to-action to the top of your page is simply genius.

Below, ASD pins a post that urges their followers to check out their booth at NFDA. This is a great strategy for turning social followers into customers.

 2. Anderson-McQueen Funeral and Cremation Centers

Anderson McQueen has done an awesome job taking advantage of one of the most underrated features of the Facebook Timeline… customizable apps. Customizable apps are located directly below your cover photo, and get more visibility than anything else on your Timeline.  You can use your customizable apps to showcase your blog, newsletters, events, etc. As you can see below, Anderson-McQueen Funeral and Cremation Centers uses custom-built apps to showcase their community newsletter called “Crossings” and to promote their schedule of community events.

Anderson-McQueen is very active with their community on Facebook, so promoting events and publications that encourage community involvement is a great social strategy for them.

3. The Daily Undertaker

The Daily Undertaker has such a large following because their social media posts are extremely relevant to their audience, and very visually appealing. They use the Highlighting Facebook Timeline Feature, which enlarges their post to make it stand out on their page. By highlighting a post – specifically one with a photo or video, you can increase your chances of appearing at the top of your follower’s news feeds. Being on top of the feed is important because it will maximize the likes, shares and comments you get on your page.

5. “I Miss My Dad”

Your Facebook Page is more than an online source for posting obituaries.  Once you have you have your families as “followers” what is going to get them to return to your page?  “I Miss My Dad” Facebook page was created by grief & healing author Eric Tomei to create an online grief community for those who have recently lost their dad. With more than 68,000 followers it’s easy to see that this approach to social media works. As a funeral professional, you should consider the relationship he’s created with his fans, and do the same on your Facebook page. It doesn’t take a lot of time, and doesn’t cost a penny to use Facebook to extend your relationship with families beyond the funeral service.

I know that there aren’t many funeral homes using Twitter (we are the first in our area, and only because I decided to give it a shot). The research I did showed me a handful that I feel work well – which I of course follow – but the majority seem only be tweeting obits. Any suggestions for great Funeral Home Tweeps?
