5 Events Not To Miss at NFDA In Baltimore, Maryland!

The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) Convention is coming up in just a few short days.

And we, for one, are absolutely stoked to get to Baltimore, Maryland for all the goodness that is to come.

After a wild ride of a year in the funeral profession, there is much to learn and grow from. And what better way to learn and grow from funeral profession’s #1 convention in the USA?

We have our schedules made and we’re definitely going to be at the following workshops because they are not to miss…

And we invite you to join them too!

Here are the 5 workshops we’re most excited to catch at NFDA (and why you can’t miss them):

#1: “Boost Pre-need Sales With a “Before I Die” Festival with Gail Rubin”

When: Sunday, October 10th, from 11:30 A.M. – 12:30 P.M.

What it’s about: Gail is going to take you on a journey through other funeral home’s experience who have hosted “When I Die” festivals and how it completely changed their business and community.

Why we’re excited: Any chance to sit in with Gail Rubin, an industry visionary and expert, is gold. We love Gail’s very progressive approach to death and funeral service, and we could all learn from her! Plus the “When I Die Festival” was a moment in time our culture will always remember, so the potential opportunities it can bring are epic!

#2: Death in Color: Understanding Black American Funeral Culture

When: Sunday, October 9th at 11:30 A.M. – 12:30 P.M.

What it’s about: According to the NFDA site, this workshop’s intention is to “provide funeral service professionals of all backgrounds a historical overview of the Black funeral home, and Black funeral culture, in America” with Vanessa Misoon.

Why we’re excited: If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the last couple of years, its the arduous, long history of racial injustice that’s present in our culture. This workshop attempts to bridge the gap of this injustice by educating and informing non-Black Americans on Black American Culture and traditions around death. In our opinion, it is certainly a minimum requirement to have some training on racial nuances in our world today.

#3: Creating Meaningful Cremation Rituals

When: Sunday, October 9th at 1:15 P.M. – 2:15 P.M.

What it’s about: Alexandra Jo from Parting Stone  is going to share with you 6 different types of rituals you can do with families to create more meaning with cremation options. This workshop will specifically help you re-frame cremation as an opportunity rather than a financial challenge at your funeral home.

Why we’re excited: If there was one main theme that has revealed itself this year, it’s that families want RITUALS, not RELIGION. The ways of today’s families are changing, and rituals are more open and less exclusive to those with certain beliefs. We encourage you to explore the art of rituals for families who aren’t religious, and challenge yourself to learn new ways to serve Millennial families and beyond with this workshop!

#4: The Transformative Power of Hospitality

When: Monday, October 10th, 7:30am – 9:30am

What it’s about: Tom Sproles of Sproles Family Funeral Home is going to take you into a journey of our favorite topic: Hospitality. The event description describes the vast difference between “customer service” and “hospitality”. Do you know the difference? If not, come here and find out!

Why we’re excited: Tom is one of our most beloved clients and the level of service he offers his families shows in hsi 4.93 star rating review (based out of nearly 200 reviews). If you want to know his secret behind shining in the community based on his service skills, please come! This one is an event you don’t want to skip out on if hospitality is not your strong suit.

#5: When Words Aren’t Enough

When: Tuesday, October 10th, 9:45am – 10:45am

What it’s about: Michele Neff Hernandez, the founder of Soaring Spirits International, an organization dedicated to supporting widows, is going to equip you with tools to support yourself while helping others through their grief (especially widows). You won’t want to miss this!

Why we’re excited: Caring for those who are grieving, beyond words, is challenging. Taking care of yourself WHILE caring for grieving hearts can be even more challenging. Michele is a grief expert and a huge inspiration for all of us to take our grief and aftercare efforts to the next level, while also taking our self care to the next level. This workshop will be super helpful for those who suffer from compassion fatigue and who are highly empathic!
