Today is a day that we take in North America to celebrate our mothers.

What would you say to your mom on Mother’s Day?

I love this video so much because its candid and real. Some of the things we’d want to say to our mothers on Mother’s Day might not be “thank you” or “I love you”. Some of us have unhealed hurts with our mothers. Some of us may not realize the gift of our moms at a certain point in our lives. This video shows that. It’s an honest look at what a collective of people would say to their mothers on this holiday.

There’s truly nothing like a mother’s love. Mothers are understanding, compassionate, patient, and have the ability to be there for us no matter what. This short film portrays this beauty of a mother’s love and it’s guaranteed to touch your heart, whether your mom is here with you still or not.

This short and sweet 2 minute video explains very directly why it’s so important to tell our mom’s how much we love and appreciate them before it’s too late. If you need that reminder, this is the perfect one for you.

For those motherless children this Mother’s Day

I recently found this excerpt in the Elephant Journal from from a book by Joy Edelman, appropriately called Motherless Daughters. This excerpt actually inspired this blog in the first place. For those of you who don’t have a mother to share this day with because she’s no longer with us, we hope this excerpt brings you solace and peace:

“Nature often offers metaphors more elegant than any we can manufacture, and Muir Woods is no exception. Redwoods have evolved to turn disaster into opportunity. In these coastal forests, death produces life.

This is what I mean: in the redwood ecosystem, all seeds are contained in pods called burls, tough brown clumps that grow where the mother tree’s trunk and root system meet. When the mother tree is logged, blown over, or destroyed by fire—when, in other words, she dies—trauma stimulates the burls’ growth hormones. 

The seeds release, and trees sprout around her, creating the circle of daughters. The daughter trees grow by absorbing the sunlight their mother cedes to them when she dies. And they get the moisture and nutrients they need from their mother’s root system, which remains intact underground even after her leaves die. Although the daughters exist independently of their mother above ground, they continue to draw sustenance from her underneath.

I am fooling only myself when I say my mother exists now only in the photograph on my bulletin board or in the outline of my hand or in the armful of memories I still hold tight. She lives on beneath everything I do. Her presence influenced who I was, and her absence influences who I am. Our lives are shaped as much by those who leave us as they are by those who stay. Loss is our legacy. Insight is our gift. Memory is our guide.”

For all the unnoticed things you do, mom…

We thought we’d finish things off with a light hearted, yet meaningful reminder for everyone. Moms, no matter how close or far you may have been with them, do SO much that goes unnoticed. An exorbitant amount! And this video shows us just how much they do. So if you are lucky enough to be able to, next time you see her, thank her for all the things you didn’t notice she did. She’ll appreciate it.
